Laura Facey first worked with Richard Nattoo in January 2025, when Kerry Chen recommended him to photograph works from Laura’s 2024 – 2025 exhibition, PORTENT. Nattoo, a multidisciplinary artist in his own right, came to photography through his architectural training. Melinda Brown, creative director and curator for PORTENT, had suggested that someone with a background in architectural photography would be ideal to capture the scale and emotion in Laura’s work. It proved a successful pairing of vision and skill, with Nattoo lending his knowledge of how to use lighting to make the pieces stand out no matter what the background or space.

Kerry Chen, who has developed a relationship with both artists, noticed the potential for dialogue between their creative practices, particularly the ways that spirituality shapes their approaches to artmaking. Chen proposed an artist talk to explore this overlapping theme, and the concept for THRESHOLDS was born.

The success of the pairing has led to Nattoo following Laura back through time to photograph some of her early works, and traveling through space to capture the beautiful Jamaican landscapes that inspired her creativity. They’ve even snuck into private homes to photograph never-before-seen commissions. Nattoo will capture it all, right up to Laura’s latest, as yet unexhibited pieces in her studio in St Ann. Nattoo’s work, as well as other photographers who’ve worked with Laura over the years, will be featured in Laura’s upcoming monograph, HEARTWOOD: a book of essays by Annei Errey celebrating 50 years of artmaking.
